Description
Debossed, "Brown & Robins Importers of Wines Liquors Groceries & Hardware Guelph C.W". 11 x 6.5" (diam). The partnership of William Brown and George Robins started in 1855 and was dissolved in the fall of 1856. Pottery produced by them during that brief 18 month period is quite scarce as few pieces have survived. There are several fine stable hairline cracks in the base which travel anywhere from 1" to 2.25" up the sides of the jug. One of these is intersected by another fine hairline (5.75" in length) that starts 0.75" above the base and angles upwards towards the right and back of the jug (please refer to photos). A small chip/void (1/4" x 1/4") is evident on the right side of the jug 2 1/2" above the base. An undecorated crock from this merchant is pictured on page 17 of "Jugs & Crocks of the Guelph Merchants" by Joyce Blyth. CODE:POT
