Description
Debossed, "John Bent & Co W Square C W". 10.25 x 11" (diam). Several through cracks are evident, the longest of which is 14" and runs horizontally across the back and curves upwards terminating on the front of the crock at the decoration. This crack is intersected by two others; one that runs vertically for 8" up the back before veering left for 3" and the other which travels downwards for 3 1/2" (veering to the left) and then travels horizontally 1/2" above the base for another 4". There's evidence that a little adhesive may have been used to help stabilize these cracks. A couple of other fine stable hairline cracks are visible on the front of the crock. A small chip exists on the rim above the right handle and 3 small chips / glaze flakes exist on the front and left side (towards the back). The ovoid shape and decoration suggest that this is an early piece of pottery produced at either the Picton pottery (during Hart's tenure) or in upper state New York. The crock is marked W. Square C.W. (Wellington Square); the site of present day Burlington. CODE:POT
