Exceptional carved slide top box from Saint-Henri-de-Levis, Quebec. Original untouched brown painted surface and incised with the name Germain Roberge on the bottom. Carved from a single block of pine with deeply carved geometrics on the top and ends while the sides have carved rosettes flanking a swirling pinwheel. An incised tree of life motif is also found on the lid which is held in place by an ingenious metal tab on the box. Minor chips to the slide edge (not visible when closed). Illustrated in Canadian Folk Art to 1950 by John Fleming and Michael Rowan, page 213. Quebec, circa 1800. H: 3", L: 8.25", W: 3". CODE:FOL
