Description
A decorated Northwest Coast souvenir/dance paddle marked P.S. and signed Frederick Alexcee (1853-1940s). Overall very good untouched condition with a rolled handgrip and the blade painted with traditional motifs in green, red and black on one side with the signature and minimal decoration on the other. Alexcee was a carver and painter who was born at Fort Simpson (now known as Lax Kw'alaams) of mixed Iroquois/ Tsimshian background and was trained as a carver in the Tsimshian tradition creating objects for traditional tribal rituals as well as curios for the tourist trade at the end of the 19th century. Examples of his works can be found in Canadian public and private collections as well as in the UK. Circa 1900. L: 16", W: 2.5". CODE:FOL
