Description
A very rare, distinctive and significant early 1820s tallcase clock signed by renowned Montreal jeweller and watchmaker William Baxter (1812-1878). This clock is photographed and discussed at length in Canadian Timekeepers (1993, Connell & Varkaris, p.74). The dial is inscribed, "W. Baxter Quebec" although inscriptions on the clock predate Baxter's arrival to Canada. Nonetheless, the tapered-waist style of this clock (made of pine and mahogany) is uniquely "Quebec". The case is inscribed Josesph Marcoux, Septembre 1822, Quebec, Rue Defosses No 27 St. Roch (an entrepot for cabinetmakers and artisans at the time). James E. Connell Collection. 37 in. x 11 1/2 in.
