Description
An historically significant 1820s tallcase clock signed by renowned Maritime clockmaker John Geddie (Pictou, NS). The painted steel dial is signed, "John Geddie, Pictou". The original brass works are believed to be made by Geddie himself (see Canadian Timekeepers, Connell & Varkaris, 1993, p.33-35). Pine case with untouched original surface. Measures 87 in. x 19 1/8 in.
Connell purchased this clock from Seitl's Antiques in Wentworth, Nova Scotia. This clock is sold with a letter of provenance from Seitl that reads as follows:
"Purchased in New Glasgow, N.S. from Mrs' Archibald, corner of Temperance & High St. It was made for her great grandfather Doctor Bethue of Pictou, it was received for services to John Geddie by the doctor who was a member of the church, 1st Pictou United where Geddie gave sermons. Another of his clocks stands in this church. CODE-CLO.
