Description
Early 1850s. Justus Morton, Brantford Ontario. Elaborately decorated with applied figures including a man wrestling with lyons with fish-like heads, a man smoking a pipe, a woman taking snuff, and multiple others that might have biblical, Greek or Roman origins. Unusual for early utilitarian pottery. Such lavish and artistic decorations are more commonly associated with pottery produced fifty years later. The other known example (with slight variation) is held by the Royal Ontario Museum. 12" x 12" x 16.5". Tight hairlines: one cross-hairline mid-body, another hairline from edge of lip, another to base. See photos. Est. $15000-18000. CODE-POT. CODE-CAN
