American. 1930s. 16� x 6� x 10.5�H This electric version of the Automatic single-thread chain stitch machine was manufactured by the Willcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Company, New York, NY circa 1930. The rotating hook, patented by J.E.A. Gibbs in 1857, was one of the most important sewing machine patents and remains in use today on almost all single thread chain stitch machines. The Automatic was the most popular of all chain stitch sewing machine.
